As former President Donald Trump announces J.D. Vance as his vice presidential pick, many are learning for the first time about Vance's wife, Usha Chilukuri Vance, an Indian American woman and the daughter of immigrants.

Usha Vance is a successful lawyer who grew up in San Diego. She met her husband while they were both studying at Yale Law School. They married in 2014 and have three children together: Ewan, 6; Vivek, 4; and Mirabel, 2.

Public records indicate that Usha Vance voted in Democratic primaries as recently as 2014, but she voted in the 2022 Republican primary when her husband was running for Senate.

After clerking for Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, Usha worked at the law firm Munger, Tolles & Olson, known for its diversity initiatives and progressive workplace structure. She has recently announced her departure from the firm, according to NBC News.

Usha Vance is also a practicing Hindu, and J.D. Vance credits her and her faith with helping him reconnect with Christianity in his adulthood.

“I did grow up in a religious household; my parents are Hindu, and I think that was one of the things that made them such good parents, that made them really very good people,” she said in a recent Fox News interview. “I knew that J.D. was searching for something. This just felt right for him.”

J.D. Vance, a Republican senator from Ohio, is well-known for his memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” published in 2016 and adapted into a Netflix film in 2020. The memoir details his upbringing in a poor Appalachian family and his relationship with Usha, portrayed by Freida Pinto in the movie.

In a 2017 NBC News interview, J.D. Vance’s former Yale Law professor Amy Chua described their relationship as “extremely unlikely, almost opposites of personality.”

Before becoming a senator, J.D. Vance was a vocal critic of Trump, even calling himself a “never Trump guy.” However, his stance softened during his 2022 Senate campaign, when he accepted an endorsement from Trump. As a senator, he has taken far-right positions on issues like immigration, abortion, climate change, and the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

At a recent Senate Banking Committee hearing, J.D. Vance cited immigration as a major cause of financial hardship in the U.S., arguing that immigrants are taking jobs from American citizens.

In her Fox News interview, Usha Vance expressed her reluctance to be in the spotlight.

“I don’t know that anyone is ever ready for that kind of scrutiny,” she said. “I’m not eager to change anything about our lives right now. But I believe in J.D. and I really love him. So we’ll just sort of see what happens with our life.”
