Mariah Carey has confirmed the heartbreaking news that both her mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison, passed away on the same day over the weekend.

"My heart is shattered," the 55-year-old Grammy winner shared in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE. "I lost my mother this past weekend, and in a tragic twist of fate, my sister also left this world on the very same day."

Mariah expressed gratitude for the precious time she spent with her mother in her final days, saying, "I feel so blessed that I was able to be with my mom during her last week. I’m deeply thankful for all the love and support, and I kindly ask for privacy as I navigate through this unimaginable pain."

As of now, no additional details regarding Patricia and Alison's causes of death have been released.

Patricia, a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach, was previously married to Alfred Roy Carey. Together, they had three children—Alison, Mariah, and their brother Morgan—before divorcing when Mariah was just three years old.

Mariah’s relationship with her mother was as complex as it was profound. In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, she wrote, "My journey with my mother has always been filled with contradictions and conflicting emotions. It was never black-and-white; it was a spectrum of every possible feeling."

She continued, "Our bond was a tangled web of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment. Yet, through it all, a complicated love kept my heart tied to hers."

Despite the challenges, Mariah and Patricia remained close. In 2010, they performed together on ABC’s Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You special, delivering a touching duet of "O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus."

In her memoir, Mariah dedicated part of her story to Patricia, writing, "To Pat, my mother, who, despite everything, I truly believe did the best she could. I will love you as best I can, always."

Mariah’s relationship with Alison was also fraught with difficulties. She revealed in her memoir that, at the time, it was "emotionally and physically safer" for her to distance herself from both Alison and Morgan.
